Wasabi Wallet Removes Central Server for Privacy

Post by Chawla Solutions »

In a major leap for Bitcoin privacy, Wasabi Wallet has released version 2.6.0—codenamed Prometheus—which completely removes reliance on centralized backend servers. This update, launched in early May 2025, makes Wasabi one of the few Bitcoin wallets offering coinjoin capabilities without depending on any third-party server infrastructure.
The upgrade centers around support for BIP158 block filters, allowing users to sync directly with their own Bitcoin full node rather than pulling block data from Wasabi’s indexers. This shift reinforces Wasabi’s core mission: putting privacy and sovereignty back in the hands of users.
Key Enhancements:
  • No Central Server Required – Full node users can now connect, sync, and coinjoin without routing data through Wasabi's backend.
  • Flexible Node Integration – Supports different node configurations and remote setups.
  • SLIP-39 Support – Introduces multi-share seed backup and recovery, reducing single-point-of-failure risk.
  • Nostr-Powered Updates – Ensures app updates are censorship-resistant by using Nostr, even if GitHub is blocked.
This version also adds a cleaner interface, fallback options for transaction broadcasting, stricter serialization rules, and the ability to avoid third-party fiat rate services—making it more private by default.
With surveillance creeping into the crypto space, Wasabi’s latest update arrives as a reminder that Bitcoin privacy tools are still evolving—and getting stronger. For anyone serious about self-custody and censorship resistance, Wasabi’s decentralized leap is a timely and powerful development.
